Gipuzkoa is a land rich in religion and spirituality, home to three of the most renowned and significant temples in Spain. The Sanctuary of Loyola, the birthplace of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and the cradle of the Jesuits, stands as a monumental Baroque complex built in the 18th century. Designed by Carlo Fontana, a disciple of Bernini, its 20-meter-diameter dome was an architectural feat that seemed impossible to support its own weight, yet it stands today as a centerpiece of religious tourism in the Basque Country. The Hermitage of La Antigua in Zumarraga, known as the cathedral of hermitages, features a unique oak wood structure that gracefully supports the roof, giving the impression that it is floating, and remains an important stop on the pilgrimage route of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
The Sanctuary of Arantzazu in Oñati combines art and spirituality in a breathtaking setting. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd in 1469, perched on a hawthorn tree, inspiring the construction of the Franciscan sanctuary in the heart of the Basque Country. Rebuilt in 1950, it stands as one of the most significant examples of contemporary Basque art, featuring contributions from renowned artists such as Sáenz de Oiza, Oteiza, Chillida, and Basterretxea. This route through the three temples offers a journey through faith, history, and art, allowing visitors to experience the spiritual and cultural heritage of the region in a profound and inspiring way.
