Embark on an unforgettable journey through the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, a place where six distinct habitats converge in a stunning display of Nantucket's natural beauty. This immersive three-mile hike, mostly over sand, offers a fascinating exploration into the very beginnings of Nantucket Harbor. Your adventure begins as the trail winds through rolling dunes, leading you past the tranquil Haulover Pond. You will then approach the east end of the tidal Coskata Pond, a gateway to the diverse landscapes that await on this guided walk through a truly unique corner of the island. The path continues toward The Glades salt marsh, a vibrant ecosystem where you can observe two active osprey nests high on their poles. From there, we backtrack to enter the cool shade of Coskata’s mature maritime oak forest. A serene trail through the trees deposits you halfway up the pond, building anticipation for the dramatic coastal views ahead and showcasing the incredible transition between island environments. This part of the walk highlights the rich biodiversity that makes the refuge so special. The hike culminates where the pond meets the harbor. Here, clay, sand, and gravel banks topped with sassafras and Eastern red cedar trees frame the Head of the Harbor. This special spot is a bustling feeding ground for American oystercatchers, willets, gulls, terns, and egrets as they work the shallows. This experience connects you directly with the wild, protected heart of Nantucket’s coastal ecosystem.
