Gisborne Cycle Adventure Blends Adventure, Nature, and Local Flavours in Tairāwhiti

A new guided cycling experience through Tairāwhiti is offering visitors an active and immersive way to explore the Gisborne region’s most iconic landscapes. The full-day journey begins at the well-known Rere Rockslide, where participants can take on the natural 60-metre water slide or observe the action from the riverbank. The stop sets an energetic tone for a route designed to combine outdoor adventure with scenic discovery.

From Rere, the route transitions into a relaxed cycle towards the picturesque Rere Falls, where riders pause for a picnic lunch surrounded by lush native scenery and cascading water. After the break, the journey continues with a 14-kilometre ride through rolling countryside toward the expansive Eastwoodhill Arboretum, offering opportunities to explore one of New Zealand’s most significant tree collections on foot if time permits.

The middle section of the tour covers approximately 50 kilometres of varied terrain, with cyclists experiencing a mix of gentle climbs, rural landscapes, and open vistas. A highlight comes with a fast-paced descent down Ngatapa Hill, where riders are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views across the surrounding countryside, making it one of the most exhilarating segments of the route.

The final stretch leads through the fertile Poverty Bay Flats, known for its vineyards and agricultural richness, before concluding back in Gisborne. The day ends on a relaxed note at Sunshine Brewery, where participants can unwind with craft beer tastings and pizza. The combination of adventure cycling, natural landmarks, and local hospitality creates a well-rounded experience showcasing the best of the Tairāwhiti region.
