Living in Montreal for 7 years. First of all, I have nothing negative to say about the hardworking employees of the YUL. God bless them, because without them, this airport would be even more catastrophic. When you arrive to/depart from this airport, you will have one of the two possibilities. You will never be able to guess which one in advance. Therefore, prepare yourself. 1- Everything will be extremely smooth to the point that you will be in downtown Montreal in 30 mins once you step out of the plane. Very fast disembarking, lightning fast border control and your suitcase will be waiting for you once you arrive to the conveyor belts. Your uber/bus will come at the exact minute it is shown, and you will be in downtown in no time. Same with departure. Very fast check-in and baggage drop off. You will have 2+ hours to enjoy the delicious 20$ Poulet Rouge and to get lost in the duty free store. Your flight will be right on time. Perfect, right?! However, this was the good scenario. Here is the bad one. 2- First of all, don’t think that I am exaggerating, because I experienced it at least 3 times. Since the highway exit to the airport is ONLY 2 LANES, YOU WILL WAIT 25+ minutes in your bus/uber just to go 800 meters to arrive at the airport. If the weather is nice, you can see people walking on the highway exit. When you enter the departures floor, you will be surprised to see 100+ people in line at every single airline kiosk. When you ask what is going on, someone will tell you that the conveyor belt system does not work. So, you go and wait in the same line for 45+ minutes just to leave all of your suitcases in the middle of nowhere for someone to come pick it up (check the cage picture). You will barely have time to pass security checks, so forget about getting a coffee or checking the duty free store. Run. Ah, at least it should be a bit better for arrivals, right? WRONG! Disembarking will take FOREVER, so good luck spending 20+ minutes in the plane with impatient karens shouting and complaining. When you finally get out and arrive at the border control, you will see that there are 500+ people waiting in front of you. It was your lucky day, because airport decided to do a double security questioning. So everyone needs to spend 5 minutes answering the questions of border control officer, while a K9 checks every single suitcase downstairs. When you finally pass the border check, you will eagerly arrive at the conveyors, just to find that your suitcase is damaged. The problem is, you have to report it immediately. The moment you step outside the airport, you’re ineligible for any compensation. So you go and waste 15 minutes waiting and answering ridiculous questions like “did you break the wheels on purpose?”. They give you a contact information and take some pictures of the suitcase. Ah, finally… you see the exit sign. It is time to leave this damn place and go home. Nuh uhhh, not that fast folks. Do you remember the 2-lane highway exit I mentioned earlier? Well the highway connection is also 2 lane, which ONLY ONE OF THEM GOES TOWARDS DOWNTOWN. So you exit the airport to see 100+ frustrated people freezing and waiting outside in line just to get an uber. Traffic does not move. It is -20°C. Last time, it took 35 minutes for me to take an uber. Bus is similar. Lyft is significantly worse. Congratulations! You finally left the airport after 2 hours of chaos. Welcome to Montreal.

Distance from domestic to international terminals is about 7-10 minutes walk. Moving sidewalks are available only within the international area past the duty free area. People with mobility issues should consider using the golf carts available in the terminal. Lots of places to eat. Overall clean terminals with clean toilets at many spots along the terminal gates.

The Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport is a large, clean, and well-organized airport with plenty of food options and good facilities for travelers. However, our experience was mixed because the immigration process took a very long time, which unfortunately caused us to miss our connecting flight to Halifax. While the airport itself is impressive and comfortable, the long wait times at immigration were disappointing. Hopefully, the process can be made quicker in the future, as the rest of the airport experience was excellent.

I had a very pleasant experience at Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL). From the moment I arrived, everything was smooth and well-organized. The airport itself is clean and easy to navigate. The overall atmosphere was calm and efficient, and the staff’s professionalism really stood out.

Not too small, not too big — this airport has everything you need and is easy to navigate. Even for regular international flights, there’s no passport control or stamping, which makes the process quick and smooth. Clean bathrooms and good amenities make it a comfortable place to travel through.
