Edinburgh’s coffee history is as rich and complex as the brew itself, and this unique walking tour delves deep into the fascinating story of Scotland’s coffee trade. From the earliest days when coffee was an exotic import to the bustling coffeehouses that became intellectual hubs, you’ll journey through time to discover how coffee shaped the culture and commerce of the city. As you walk through the Old Town, you’ll visit the very sites where Edinburgh’s first coffeehouses once stood, learning about the merchants, thinkers, and adventurers who gathered there to discuss politics, philosophy, and trade. These were places where ideas flourished, businesses were born, and society evolved all fueled by the energizing power of coffee.
The tour reaches its grand finale with exclusive access to a hidden piece of Edinburgh’s past John’s Coffee House, a historic 18th-century meeting point that has been sealed off from the public for nearly two centuries. Here, in a setting once frequented by philosophers, pirates, and prosecutors, you’ll enjoy a freshly brewed coffee as you take in the atmosphere of a long-forgotten world. The underground space, rich with history and mystery, offers an unforgettable glimpse into a time when coffee was more than just a drink—it was a revolution. Whether you’re a coffee lover, a history enthusiast, or simply curious about Edinburgh’s hidden past, this immersive experience promises to awaken your senses and leave you with a deeper appreciation for the city’s coffee culture.

The coffee tour in Edinburgh was a genuinely fun and unexpectedly engaging history lesson. Instead of focusing on roasting or brewing techniques, the tour dives into how coffee first arrived in Scotland, how the early coffee houses shaped the city, and how Edinburgh’s café culture grew into what it is today. What made it great was how naturally the guide told the stories. Nothing felt scripted or heavy. You’re walking through the city, learning how people used to gather, debate, trade ideas, and essentially build the foundation of modern coffee culture. It’s the perfect mix of light history, good company, and a few well-chosen coffee stops along the way. If you enjoy storytelling, discovering the roots of a city, or simply want a different way to explore Edinburgh, this tour is absolutely worth it. You finish feeling like you’ve learned something without even trying.

We did the tour and tasting with Eleanor and she was great. I actually don't want to tell you how accommodating, flexible, and helpful she was because she might not be able to do that for everyone! We really appreciated everything. It was a very nice experience. Highly recommended for anyone who isn't already a whiskey expert or anyone who wants to get below the streets of Edinburgh or anyone who just wants to enjoy the company of a fun, knowledgeable guide.

We had an incredible whisky tasting experience at The Lost Close! Our guide, Mark, was fantastic - extremely knowledgeable, fun, and engaging from start to finish. We sampled four whiskies in a unique underground close, which made the whole experience feel intimate and special. Mark answered all of our questions with enthusiasm and taught us so much about the history of whisky, as well as the specific varieties we tasted. He was also very accommodating and made sure everyone felt comfortable and included. It was the perfect blend of education and entertainment, and a must-do experience in Edinburgh for anyone who enjoys whisky or wants to learn more about it!

Had a blast on our whisky tour. Eleanor had a great sense of humor. Loved that I could do a basic tasting while my husband did the luxury tasting since that would be a waste for me. Allowed us to sample options aligned with our previous knowledge/likes of whisky. Assisted us in moving our booking after our flight was cancelled causing a severely delayed arrival to Edinburgh. I understand this may not always be available but it was very much appreciated.

Excellent time with our tour. We tasted several really interested whiskys. Many that would be nearly impossible to find in the USA. Our guide was funny and knowledgeable. Since the room is so small, the tour was only 6 of us, which was nice and intimate.
