This one-hour Armona Route tour offers a relaxing and informative boat experience through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, departing from Olhão. Accompanied by an experienced skipper who also acts as your guide, you will receive valuable insights about the lagoon, its ecosystems, and local life. Binoculars are provided to help you observe birds and natural features, along with a brochure containing local images to enhance your understanding of the area. The itinerary includes navigation through the Ria Formosa with a short stop of approximately 15 minutes on Armona Island before returning to Olhão.
Olhão has a long and rich history closely linked to fishing and maritime trade, with evidence of settlement dating back to prehistoric times due to its access to water and abundant fish. The town played a key role during the French invasions of the Algarve in 1808, when local residents rose up and expelled the invaders, earning Olhão the title of Restoration Village. Over time, the small fishing settlement grew economically and socially, becoming a city in 1985 and remaining strongly connected to fishing and the canning industry. Armona Island, stretching around nine kilometers in length, is known for its impressive dune system and unique sediment deposition within the Ria Formosa. Originally formed by fishermen and shellfish gatherers, the island is now largely made up of holiday homes and seasonal rentals, while still preserving its traditional coastal character.
