Escape the bustling tourist zones and venture into the western region of Rio de Janeiro, an area rich in natural beauty with pristine beaches, lush mangroves, and a vibrant seafood culture. Our journey begins with a visit to Sítio Burle Marx, the former residence of the legendary landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, whose innovative designs have become a hallmark of Brazilian modernism. As you explore the estate, you'll admire its stunning gardens filled with exotic plants, visit the house and workspaces where Burle Marx once lived and created, and discover the various structures that make up this inspiring property.
Next, we’ll head to Rio’s only cachaça distillery, where you’ll learn about the production of Brazil’s iconic sugarcane spirit and have the opportunity to purchase a bottle of artisanal cachaça. The tour continues through the coastal neighborhood of Barra de Guaratiba, the southernmost district of Rio, known for its scenic beauty. We’ll pass its beach and mangrove-filled landscapes, nestled between the Atlantic Forest-covered mountains, before stopping at a local seafood restaurant for an optional lunch. After your meal, we’ll take a picturesque drive along the stunning coastline as we return to your accommodation, ending this immersive journey through Rio’s hidden natural and cultural gems.

The Foundation has done an exceptional job keeping the Burle Marx Estate not just intact, but alive - a breathing monument to biodiversity, conservation, art, culture, and intellect. And still, it’s comes as a surprise that many Cariocas still have no idea who he was. A Brazilian visionary. A Renaissance force. Hiding in plain sight in spite of his iconic design works all over Copacabana and Ipanema. We’d booked the guided weekend tour months in advance through Tripadvisor - surprisingly, one of the few agencies offering this particular excursion. It wasn’t cheap, but every Real proved its worth the moment we left the city behind. The hour-long drive passed through many pleasant suburbs as we arrived at the estate, where the grounds unfolded like a paradisiacal oasis - lush, serene, and impossibly beautiful. Every turn revealed a scene more stunning than the last, a balm for weary eyes. A few minor qualms worth noting—the tablets provided for the English narration were packed with insightful and relevant information, but unfortunately hampered by sluggish connectivity and rather outdated hardware. Then there was the curious case of the gift shop, which charmingly refused all forms of electronic payment, accepting only local cash. Thankfully, our quick-thinking guide turned hero for the day, venturing into town to retrieve cash from an ATM and graciously exchanging it with us. A slight hiccup, but handled with grace.

Definitely worth a visit! Had bo idea of Roberto Burle Marx before coming here and now I’m a fan! This garden is a piece of heaven! And the staff is very lovely and helpful! Information here is a bit wrong, their closing hr is not 13:30 it’s actually 15:30. If you have a chance go visit and enjoy this amazing place🤍 Also entrance fee is super cheap only R$10!

Such a treasure. My experience was awesome. Super organized place, friendly guide and plenty of place to park the car. The admission price is affordable (R$10 per person) and the conservation of the gardens and buildings was impeccable. The only difficulty I had was to schedule the day of the visit, because the number of visitors is very limited. I recommend this place for tourists and locals and I definetly will go back.

A must see if you’re in the area and want to escape the chaos of Rio. The sítio is more beautiful than the Botanical Garden in my opinion. If you’re a plant collector or botanist, you’ll be in heaven. If you appreciate art, you’ll get a full spectrum of religious, modern, abstract, and architecture. The tour was about two hours but the building on the top of the hill was closed to renovations.

Not to be missed if you are a plant lover and landscape aficionado. Interesting architecture and many works of art by Burle Marx. Make sure to take mosquito repellent. My guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, the tour was in English in the PM. The visit takes about 3 hours, wear comfortable shoes.
