We rented a kayak from Oleta river state park and it took us about 15 minutes to get to racoon island. When we arrived 10-15 cute racoons came directly to our kayak. We fed them some fruit, but what they are really craving for is FRESHWATER. So if you have the chance, bring lots of it! There is no natural freshwater source on the island, so these little guys are really dependent on water brought by visitors. A trip there is definitely worth it, we loved the whole experience
Took a kayak tour to the island and it was amazing. A bunch of little raccoons greet you on the beach as you approach. They are clearly used to humans bringing food and water so can be quite pushy. Beware, they can also bite. This is clearly a big attraction, possibly for party boats also, and it is sad that there is lots of evidence in plastics littered across the beach and island. Evidence also of the raccoons chewing on bottle tops! Maybe take a waste bag with you and pick some of this up.
Rent a kayak from Oleta river state park. The staff said it takes roughly half hour to raccoon island , but we are not good at kayaking so it took us almost 50 mins to get there. Raccoons will greet you once you reach the island. A bit aggressive they even will crawl on your legs begging for snacks but don’t worry that’s only a few seconds . I followed many reviews taking a big bottle of fresh water wanna give them but raccoons seemed more interested in snacks 😆 please take all the trash away! Let’s protect the little lovely island.
