Rovaniemi was almost completely destroyed at the end of World War II, and the post-war reconstruction required tremendous effort. Alvar Aalto took on the task of developing a new city plan for Rovaniemi as well as a regional development plan. The city library, theater, and town hall form the core of Aalto’s vision for Rovaniemi, showcasing his innovative approach to urban planning and architecture. Interestingly, the city plan designed by Aalto is said to resemble the shape of a reindeer, reflecting his creative integration of local culture and symbolism into the city’s layout.
During the visit to Aalto’s buildings, we will marvel at the unique use of light throughout the interiors and exteriors. Guests are encouraged to reflect on the design, including the furnishings and architectural details, and consider how they feel within these spaces. Observing the library, theater, and town hall, one can see how Finnish landscapes and natural elements influenced Aalto’s design choices. This tour provides an opportunity to appreciate the thoughtful combination of functionality, aesthetic beauty, and cultural context that makes Aalto’s work so distinctive.

The overall experience is good. We bought the English guide and it was very nice. The guide was very friendly and spoke calmly and clearly. It lasted 60 minutes, 30 minutes was the guide talking and the other 30 minutes was for us to roam and explore.

Must visit for architecture and design enthusiast. Booking in advance is recommended as it's small guided groups. There was the guided tour part then we had the chance to explore the various spaces within the studio independently.

Loved the guided tour! It lasts 30min, then you can wander for 30 more minutes in the studio and take pictures. Might feel a little short as, unlike in the Aalto House, you can touch and try all furnitures and designs. Book your tickets in advance.

Aalto Foundation makes guided visits to the Aalto Studio. The ticket cost 18 Euros per person. Please book your visit online, although yesterday there were available spaces on all the scheduled visits. The host gave a great explanation for approximately 40 minutes and the remaining time of the 1 hour visit is for you to take photos. Excellent place especially for architects.

Absolutely amazing. I had such a great time to experience Alva Aalto's work in a real place where he used to work. Bought a combined ticket to Alvar Aalto House not so far from Studio. Guide was fantastic! Was able to buy some gift at a gift shop in the Studio. The garden is beautiful with giant pine tree. I loved it so much!
