My wife and I just finished an 8-day stay at the residences at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, and like previous trips, the location, views, golf course, and the beach are absolutely amazing. What was not amazing was the service. When you go to a resort of this caliber and price point in Hawaii, you expect top level service, unfortunately, it was the farthest thing from excellent. The staff was inattentive, the food at Manta was just ok, the food and drinks at Copper Bar were NOT good and the service at Meridia, Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, was among the worst we have ever experienced, anywhere. The beach bar simply shut down, like out of business, about half way through our stay. No explanation, no advanced notice, and no temporary alternative other than hiking up the hill to the previously mentioned Copper Bar for a drink (even just for a water) or food. But guess what didn’t change, the prices. The Big Island seems to have fallen into the hands of putting up with a level of severely diminished service, while maintaining their exceptionally high price point and getting away with excuses of staff shortages and a meaningless, sorry for the inconvenience, recurring apologies. Hopefully this review helps travelers set their expectations accordingly or encourages them to choose another island until Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, and other resorts on the big island get their proverbial stuff together.

We have always loved our visits to Mauna Kea beach, but our latest experience was very disheartening. We arrived around 5:30 PM, only to be told by the gate staff that they close public access 45 minutes before sunset. This was the first we had ever heard of such a rule, and it was applied so strictly that we were turned away for being what could have only been a minute or two late. It is truly disappointing when hotel policies prevent the public from enjoying public beaches.

Under renovation right now so some construction noise during the day, but not too distracting. The Resort is wonderful, as are the employees, but the beach is the best! We had a fantastic time and will definitely go back and check out the new Spa that's being built. Watching the Manta Rays feed at night was an added bonus!
