We had a terrible experience with Safari Helicopters in Hilo. I clearly requested and confirmed our flight for Monday, August 4, 2025, but on arrival we were told it had been booked for the following day, despite having written email evidence. This mistake caused major disruption to our family holiday — forcing us to rearrange plans, drive more than three hours unnecessarily, miss out on other attractions, and incur additional costs. Even after providing written proof of the correct date, Safari refused to take responsibility or offer a fair resolution. Their response felt dismissive and unhelpful, leaving us out of pocket for an issue entirely beyond our control. If you plan to book with them, triple-check all dates and written correspondence before paying. Unfortunately, based on our experience, I wouldn’t trust Safari Helicopters to handle bookings accurately or to stand by their customers when errors occur.

I booked the volcano tour tru the Chase travel portal. We took our flight last week on Sep 19th. This was the best experience I have had so far with helicopter tours in the US. From the moment we got to the airport until we left, the staff was amazing and very friendly. Our pilot was Andrew, he did a great job and made sure everyone had a pleasant flight. He also answered all the questions the group had and provided us with very interesting facts about Hawaii and its volcanoes. We were very lucky to have a clear day with light winds. Kīlauea volcano started erupting few hours before our flight which made our flight an unforgettable one. On the way back we had the chance to fly over some waterfalls just west of Hilo. Overall, they offer an excellent service and a great price. The flight lasted around 55 minutes. Definitely we will book another flight with them when we go back to Hawaii. Bring cash, $1 bills or quarters to pay for parking since it doesn’t take credit cards.
We had an amazing experience with Safari Helicopters in Hilo! The flight over the active volcano in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park was absolutely breathtaking, and seeing Mauna Kea from the air was unforgettable. We were even lucky enough to sit up front, which made the ride even more special. Our pilot Andrew was fantastic, very skilled and knowledgeable, and the ground crew made everything smooth and easy from start to finish. Overall, a top-notch experience that we would highly recommend!

a very good and fun day, which included return flights, helicopter ride and mini bus transportation. many areas covered on the island with good commentary from the bus driver. be prepared for a long day if you are coming from Oahu, but a good fun day
I was really happy to see Kilauea's Halemaumau Crater from both the helicopter and the ground. There were a few things I didn't know until the day of the event, so I thought I'd add a few notes for those who are considering participating. There were 5 people in the helicopter, including me, and 10 people in the van, including me. Although it wasn't mentioned in the tour details, lunch was included and chicken wraps were provided. I was able to hear various explanations about Hawaii from the guide while traveling by car. The explanation for all the participants was in English, but the guide spoke Japanese, so we could chat in Japanese when we arrived at each spot. (It might just be this guide.)

He navigated the skies with complete confidence and gave us breathtaking views of the volcano and rugged coastline that we’ll never forget. On top of that, Jim was absolutely hilarious! His witty commentary had us laughing while still delivering fascinating insights about the Big Island’s geology and history. The perfect balance of thrill, beauty, and humor. This was hands down one of the best experiences we’ve had in Hawaii. The whole team at Safari Helicopters made it memorable, and we can’t recommend them enough. Outstanding in every way!
Having never flown in a helicopter, we were excited to experience the big island of Hawaii by air. Unfortunately, the day we arrived, the volcano was blowing smoke, making it too difficult to fly over. So, our pilot took us to Mauna Loa and across the island to some of the water falls instead. We got to see the coast line of the Eastern side of Hawaii... all which was absolutely gorgeous. Our pilot shared much history and tid bits about the island which made the trip even more pleasurable. With 5 family members total, the flight was comfy and all seats had great views... even mine, sitting in the middle! This was one of the less expensive tours... and we were quite pleased to have the helicopter for just our family.
