Have you ever dreamed of being a cowboy — or sabanero, as they are known in Costa Rica? Riding across wide-open fields under endless blue skies, herding cattle and horses, and living the freedom of ranch life? At Hotel Hacienda Guachipelín, located in the heart of Guanacaste’s traditional cattle country at the foot of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, you can turn that dream into reality. This immersive experience allows you to step into the boots of a real Guanacastean sabanero and share a day of ranch work, tradition, and adventure in one of the most authentic settings in Costa Rica.
Your day begins early — just like real farm life — at 5:45 AM with hands-on cow milking in the pen. Fresh milk is delivered daily to the hotel kitchen to become part of the delicious breakfast served to guests, and you'll witness this process firsthand. After breakfast, the adventure continues as you prepare to ride out for ranch tasks with the sabaneros. Depending on the day’s needs, you might help saddle and groom horses, herd cattle across open fields, work in the stables or corrals, check livestock in distant pastures, or even repair fences. With the rhythm of real ranch life guiding the day and an authentic picnic lunch included, this unforgettable experience connects you to nature, culture, tradition, and the spirit of Costa Rican cowboy heritage.

The Western riding lessons Stephen supplies at Bullhorn Ranch are fun and encouraging, and his wealth of knowledge and experience show that he’s a truly skilled horseman who really knows and understands horses. Stephen is an excellent instructor. Extremely knowledgeable, on horse care , passionate, and dedicated to teaching all aspects of horse care as well as riding. His focus on safety, respect, and understanding of the horse makes every lesson both enjoyable and educational. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to learn Western riding and proper horsemanship with an expert!

Bullhorn Ranch is a unique place full of charm and possibilities. Steve brings both a calming and exciting energy to anyone there to learn. His natural horsemanship would fill the most nervous student with confidence. I was so impressed with his teaching style and the quality of his horses. Thank you Steve! Oliver and Erika :)

Last week, myself and a friend visited Bullhorn Ranch for a western introduction. We both have previous experience with English riding and wanted to give Western a go. Stephens knowledge on the topic was remarkable. His passion and enthusiasm was contagious! I found it very easy to learn from him and all of his horses are so beautiful. I would definitely recommend a trip to Bullhorn Ranch!

Me and my best friend went to Bullhorn Ranch for a 2 hour lesson on Western Riding, we both had years of experience English Riding but wanted to have experienced Western Riding which is something I have wanted to do for years. The experience was amazing, the horses were all well taken care of and the owner truly cares about teaching and educating, unlike some other places which would just have you get on the horse and sit there riding in circles with little instruction. We learnt about the horses, equipment & many other important things before getting on a horse and being taught how to ride a Western Horse. He was very good at giving clear instructions & made jokes to make the experience even better. I most definitely will be back again & I will definitely want to someday stick to Western over English riding. I 110% recommended coming to Bullhorn Ranch regardless of your experience level.

I spent a few days down at Bull Horn Ranch and had a brilliant time. Steven Cox was a very welcoming host, full of stories and constant tips and knowledge on riding, equipment and horsemanship. I was able to learn to rope a wooden dummy which was something I had never got a chance to do before. As a western rider from N.ireland I wanted to explore the country and connect with others in the western community and Steven was a great friend to make as he has so much knowledge and experience as a western rider and American Paint horse breeder
