Throughout the year, South Island SUP and Mer Tales Ocean Journeys host a variety of fundraising SUP events designed for paddlers of all levels, from beginners to seasoned enthusiasts. Events such as the New Year's Day Polar Bear Paddle, International Women's Day, Earth Day, and Oceans Day take place during the first half of the year, while festive occasions like the annual Hallowe'en Witches Paddle and Santa & Friends Paddle round out the latter part. These events not only provide an opportunity to enjoy the water and community spirit but also support meaningful causes, including the Victoria Mustard Seed Foodbank, Bridges for Women Society, and Pacific Wild.
Paddlers typically launch from Willows Beach or Gonzales Bay in Victoria, BC, depending on weather conditions, and each session lasts between 1 to 1.5 hours. Participants are encouraged to dress according to the event theme, such as Santa hats, elf costumes, or Hallowe’en attire, and to wear weather-appropriate clothing with layers for comfort. Optional equipment rentals include drysuits, boots, gloves, and dry bags for valuables. Attendees should also bring a towel, a change of clothes, a strap for glasses, water, snacks, and, most importantly, their enthusiasm and excitement. These events provide a unique and festive way to enjoy SUP while giving back to the community, creating memorable experiences on the water for everyone involved.
