The Southern Expedition is a 5-day, 4-night adventure that takes hikers from Jimmy Creek Trailhead to the final finish in Dunkeld, traversing the southern reaches of the Grampians Peaks Trail. This journey begins with backcountry hiker camps in remote and exposed locations, moving later to some of the best-supported campsites on the GPT. Hikers will experience previously untracked sections of the Mount William Range, wetlands, ancient forests, and expansive grasslands, before climbing the Serra Range and summiting Signal Peak, Mount Abrupt, and Mount Sturgeon. Each night, participants will rest in supported camps, enjoy freshly cooked meals, and sleep under the stars. The expedition concludes with a descent into Dunkeld, where the trail finishes, followed by a celebratory lunch and a transfer back to Halls Gap.
Over the five days, hikers will cover varied terrain, from rugged ridgelines to old-growth forests and wetland plains, observing diverse flora and fauna along the way. The route passes dramatic peaks, vast panoramas, and culturally significant landscapes that reflect both the geological history of the Grampians and the region’s Indigenous heritage. The expedition is fully guided by experienced local leaders, with all group equipment provided, though participants must carry personal clothing, sleeping gear, and mattresses. Meals on the trail are included, but town meals and pre- or post-hike accommodation are not. This journey is ideal for those seeking a continuous, multi-day hiking experience to complete the Southern Stage of the GPT.
