This half day swimming experience invites you to explore the untouched beauty of Ponta de São Lourenço, one of Madeira’s most striking natural reserves. The peninsula is known for its dramatic cliffs, wild terrain and complete absence of human habitation, creating an atmosphere of pure isolation and natural wonder. As you make your way across the eastern tip of the island, you will be surrounded by rugged landscapes shaped by wind and sea, offering sweeping views across the Atlantic. The route is scenic and varied, with gentle rises and falls along paths that follow the edge of this narrow stretch of land.
Upon reaching Cais do Sardinha, a peaceful bay named after its former owners, you will step into warm turquoise waters that define this part of the reserve. The swim takes place in an environment rich with marine life and exceptional visibility, making it a favourite among open water enthusiasts. If fortune is on your side, you may even glimpse the elusive monk seal that inhabits these waters. After completing the session, a relaxing boat ride back to Quinta do Lorde offers time to enjoy the scenery once more, bringing the experience to a perfect close.

Astonishing view. We toll each and every path upon our arrival which took us about three and a half hours. You can really enjoy the nature and the view on the sea and cliffs. Definately a must visit place when driving down the east cost of Madeira.

A wonderful place for a walk if you love rocky views and the ocean 🤍 I really enjoyed this trail. A few important points, in my opinion: 1. The entrance fee is €3. You can pay by cash or card. 2. Toilets are paid — €2 at the entrance and €1 in the restaurant — so make sure you have some coins. 3. If the weather is rainy, the trail will be quite muddy ;) It’s better to wear trekking or waterproof shoes. 4. Even in dry weather, wear non-slip shoes — there are lots of stones, sand, and the last climb is quite steep. Regular sneakers can be slippery. 5. If it’s sunny, make sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, and water. 6. There’s a beach along the way where you can swim in the ocean — bring your swimsuit and a towel. 7. You can take a boat back for €15 to the tourist village of Quinta do Lorde (not far from the parking area) if you don’t feel like walking back. 8. A taxi from or to Funchal will cost around €30. 9. The Cafetaria Sardine House café & snacks, located along the route, often has long lines. 10. There are a lot of people on the trail — keep that in mind, especially if you prefer peaceful, quiet hikes ;) Enjoy your hike 🤗

Epic hike, amazing views but quiet challenging. The route to the halfway point is downhill and easily manageable. From there, a steep hike uphill of 1km leads you to a fantastic viewpoint over the east coast — this route is however poorly maintained and not “official” so walk at your own risk. (But is in our opinion very much worth the climb!) the way back is steeper but still doable while enjoying the views. Parking is okay, but try to come early in the morning for a beautiful sunrise or late in the afternoon for less crowds.

Great hike along the ridge almost the entire way. Rocky area, fortunately cloudy, pleasant weather. Otherwise the sun is shining. At the beginning of the hike, there are a few snack carts and a man who collects the mandatory 3 Euro/person nature reserve fee. (You can also pay with a bank card.) We only did the hike there on a stony, dirt well-built road with many stairs up and down. You can walk comfortably with good hiking shoes, my 6-year-old son also had a smooth ride. At the end of the hike, there is a cafe where you can rest, go to the toilet (1 Euro cash), there is a snack, you can sit down. Then you can either turn back or walk to the nearby bay, where you can snorkel and take a speedboat to the nearby harbor.

A beautiful hike towards eastern tip of the Island. The bare scenery is remarkably different than the rest of the island. The hike is relatively easy, but good hiking shoes are recommended as it is rocky (and surely slippery when it rains which was not the case when we were there). The parking is challenging but unlike other hikes you can park down the road. The views are breathtaking. There’s a little restaurant at the end of the hike, with super grumpy staff. We took a speedboat back. Highly recommended.
