This scenic journey introduces you to some of the most impressive landscapes and peaceful villages that define Madeira’s beauty. The tour begins at Pico dos Barcelos, a viewpoint set high above Funchal where you are welcomed with sweeping views across the city and its surrounding coastline. From this elevated spot, the panorama stretches all the way to the distant Desertas Islands, offering a perfect moment to appreciate the island’s dramatic geography before you travel deeper into its mountainous interior.
Continuing toward the central highlands, the route leads you to Eira do Serrado, a remarkable viewpoint overlooking the secluded village of Curral das Freiras. Nestled in a deep valley shaped by towering peaks, this remote settlement has a rich history linked to the nuns who once sought refuge here. The village’s quiet charm and unique volcanic like terrain create a striking contrast to the lively coastal areas. The journey concludes in the traditional fishing village of Camara de Lobos, where colorful boats, peaceful harbor views and the option to enjoy local drinks create a warm and authentic end to your exploration.

Nice valley in the central of the eiland. We had a nice lunch and drinks. We have the chestnut plate and soup that was very special.

A fairy tale like city nestled in steep mountains. I never ventured into the city itself but the view from on the top of the mountains was surreal and would definitely recommend it as one of the things you should do in Madeira.

What a wonderful stay. Although Curral das Freiras is a rural town we had planned various hikes in the area and so we decided to stay in the village. And boy, am I glad that we did. We stayed 1 week in the 2 bedroom apartment (four of us) with a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains. Our hosts could not do enough for us, they were super friendly and accommodating for all our extra requests as we are serious hikers. The apartment was very clean and had all the necessary facilities. At the entrance to the building is a lovely little coffee shop/snack bar that made some amazing sandwiches for our hikes. I also recommend that you visit the local supermarket if you want to purchase any local made liquors. A wonderful, comfortable stay in Curral das Freiras with superhosts Melissa and Manny.
