Stopped here today as it was the first stop on our East Tour of Madeira. Views fantastic. Probably the best element of the whole tour, on reflection.

An unforgettable place — we were lucky with the weather. Part of the trail was closed, but from what we managed to see, watching the clouds drifting between the mountains was absolutely incredible. There is also a fairly large parking area that’s easy to pay for. There’s a toilet available as well, but it’s paid and can only be used with cash.
Maria

A breathtaking view, mixture of clouds, sun and tranquility. You feel like a bird in its flight. The first 30 minutes of the parking are free, there is place to leave your car while enjoying as well as a small center where you can sit and take a hot drink
Avihay

A lookout point at 1,818 meters, Pico do Arieiro is the third highest peak on the island and the only one that can be easily reached by car. The road itself winds its way up through forests, setting you up for the dramatic view. At the top, you’ll find yourself above a blanket of clouds that stretches to the horizon, with jagged mountain peaks jutting out from within. The place is equipped with a small visitor center, a cafe and an iconic circular radar station. Champions' tip: The ultimate experience is to get here at sunrise. Seeing the sun rise and flood the sea of clouds in orange and pink is a memory you won't forget. Bring very warm clothes and a raincoat, no matter what the weather is like in Funchal. Additional tips - arrive at the mountain's parking lot at a quarter to six at least, to get a spot close to the start, otherwise the next parking lot is further away. Pay for 3 hours of parking in the parking lot, it's very cheap and there was police there even at those hours. If sunrise is well past and it's still very cloudy / rainy, it's worth moving on to the next destination because you'll see the sun as we did - on the horizon and blurry. It's recommended to search for a webcam on Google (Pico do Arieiro webcam) to see what the situation is at the lookout. It's just a matter of luck, if you don't get to see it - no big deal.

The mountain deserves 5 star, but the little shop and the toilets are 0. They’re only opened around 7 am, but idk why, when most of the people is there around 5 am, so that’s why everywhere is poo and toilet papers. The best sunrise in my life!!
GetYourGuide

Great transfer and good info about the hike. I'd book again anytime.

I highly recommend this trip. As PR1 is closed, this tour will take you to see both Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo. You will first go to Achada do Teixeira where you will have plenty of time to do P1.2 Pico Ruivo trail, the car will pick you out from the same place it left you and drive you to Pico do Arieiro summit where you can do the open part of PR1(about 1.2 km until after Stairway to heaven) Our guide, Roberto, was very helpful, and besides comunicating very clearly the times we had for our self-guided trails, he also gave us many other useful info about the island, other activities and trails.
Mikenna

I highly recommend this trip! As PR1 is closed past the Stairway to Heaven, this is a great substitute. The driver will pick you up and take you to PR1.2. You get 2.5/3 hours to complete it and then he will bring you to PR1 - you get to hike the 1.2km to stairway to heaven and back, Best of both worlds while PR1 stays closed. The communication from the company is great too!
Gabriela

I highly recommend this experience! Even though PR1 is partially closed, many people might think it’s not possible to reach both peaks — but this trip lets you do exactly that. Our driver, Fabio, was amazing — attentive, friendly, and very knowledgeable.
Keri

Great communication from time of booking up until the end of the day . Our driver Fabio was fantastic, such a comfortable and safe drive . He checked in with us throughout the day and gave us some great advice, the day was planned really well .
