The Bordeaux wine industry, a cornerstone of the region’s identity, has long recognized the power of architecture in enhancing wine tourism. While the 19th-century châteaux already projected prestige and renown through their monumental designs, the recent architectural renaissance stems from several converging factors: the surge in Bordeaux grand cru prices during the 1990s, shifting consumer interest toward high-quality wines, the need for upgraded facilities—especially those required for gravity-flow winemaking—and rapidly expanding tourism. Château Lafite-Rothschild paved the way when Ricardo Bofill was commissioned in 1985 to design a new winery, setting a precedent that soon inspired around fifteen other estates to combine advanced wine production with high-profile architectural ambition. This evolution has made architecture an essential tool for visibility, storytelling, and experience-making in the world of Bordeaux wine.
