The Bordeaux wine industry, a cornerstone of the region’s identity, has long recognized the power of architecture in enhancing wine tourism. While the 19th-century châteaux already projected prestige and renown through their monumental designs, the recent architectural renaissance stems from several converging factors: the surge in Bordeaux grand cru prices during the 1990s, shifting consumer interest toward high-quality wines, the need for upgraded facilities—especially those required for gravity-flow winemaking—and rapidly expanding tourism. Château Lafite-Rothschild paved the way when Ricardo Bofill was commissioned in 1985 to design a new winery, setting a precedent that soon inspired around fifteen other estates to combine advanced wine production with high-profile architectural ambition. This evolution has made architecture an essential tool for visibility, storytelling, and experience-making in the world of Bordeaux wine.

The visit offers the opportunity to explore this dynamic transformation within the Médoc, north of Bordeaux, where several estates showcase distinctive contemporary architectural interventions: the Norman Foster-designed winery at Château Margaux and its exhibition space, the renovated Château Lynch-Bages (BPM, Pei), and Château Pedesclaux redesigned by Wilmotte and BPM, among others. Beyond architecture, the Médoc’s unique landscape—positioned between river and ocean—provides a striking backdrop for understanding the region’s environmental and historical context. The itinerary includes a pause in Pauillac, perfect for lunch or for exploring its redesigned waterfront and historic streets, and a stop near Margaux to approach the Garonne and discuss its constructive legacy. Optional wine tastings can be arranged, and the route passes by the Matmut Atlantique stadium by Herzog & de Meuron before concluding with an optional visit to the Cité du Vin (Xtu architects), offering a fitting immersive finale to this sensory and architectural journey.
