The Prince Bishops of Durham were powerful rulers in medieval Northern England, holding both secular authority and religious influence. Their unique position allowed them to rival monarchs at times, shaping the political and spiritual landscape of the region. This tour begins in the historic city of Durham, where you will explore key sites including Durham University’s Archaeology collections. Afterward, you will enjoy a relaxed lunch before continuing to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral, one of the greatest architectural and spiritual landmarks in Britain.
The journey then continues to Bishop Auckland, home to the Auckland Project, an ambitious regeneration program preserving and celebrating the region’s heritage. Here, you will visit Auckland Castle, once the grand palace of the Prince Bishops and now a place where their story—and the wider history of faith in the British Isles—is brought to life. Today we did a full day private tour of Hadrian's Wall with Alex, the owner of Iles Tours. We had the best time and learned so much. I wish I could give him a rating above 5 stars. The tour he gave us should be rated at a score of 100!!!! We went to several locations, including Housesteads and Vindolanda, to learn about the wall and the Romans. At each stop, Alex showed us unique features of the wall and forts. His knowledge of the entire area and history of the time period is incredible and he helped us learn so much about the period. We toured the museums in addition to walking the wall and as we toured, Alex explained each item in great detail. I wish more guides put this much study into their jobs. We have such a good understanding of the area thanks to Alex. If you want to learn about Hadrian's Wall, use this company and book a tour with Alex. The next time we're here, we definitely will do another tour with him. We're huge lovers of history and his tour went into so much depth that it was perfect!!!
Alex (Sandy) was the most sweet, polite, funny and informative guide! It was a truly magical day, in large part because of his guidance. He was flexible as well with regards to picking us up and dropping us off and what we did during the tour. Just made this a wonderful experience for us. He was easy to contact as well. The tour itself - the Holy Island was breathtaking as were the views from Bamburgh Castle. Alex is an archaeologist and just a major lover of history so he provided us with information I don't believe another tour company could have. Next time I travel to UK, I will 1000% be doing another tour with his group!! Thank you Alex for teaching us so much (even how to interpret some of the old paintings)! You have changed the way I experience historical sites forever!
We had a wonderful day at Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle! We had plenty of time to explore both and never felt rushed! Alex is a fabulous guide who answered our questions and pointed out so much that we would have missed entirely on our own. I highly recommend this tour.

We had a wonderful tour with Alex to visit Bamburgh and Alwick castles. We also had a quick visit to Lindisfarne before the tide came in!
