Explore one of the major cities of the Industrial Revolution on this immersive four-hour tour of Newcastle upon Tyne, a place whose story stretches from its origins as a Roman fort to its rise as a global industrial powerhouse. As you walk through the historic heart of the city, you’ll uncover the landmarks, people and events that shaped Newcastle across nearly two thousand years. Your guide will lead you through key sites including the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas and Newcastle’s Castle, both central to the city’s development. Built in 1080 by a son of William the Conqueror, the castle once defended Newcastle from Scottish forces, including a famous but unsuccessful attack led by William Wallace. St Nicholas Cathedral, first recorded in 1092, later became the city’s principal parish church, standing as a symbol of Newcastle’s enduring community and faith.
This tour offers a deep and engaging insight into how Newcastle has influenced the wider world through innovation, resilience and cultural identity. As you move through its streets, you’ll learn how the city evolved from medieval stronghold to industrial centre, and how its legacy still shapes the region today. Ideal for history lovers or first-time visitors, the route blends architectural beauty, dramatic stories and little-known facts that bring the past to life. By the end, you’ll have a richer understanding of Newcastle’s contributions to industry, engineering and social change, along with a clear sense of its character as a northern city of remarkable heritage.

7 April 2025 I had the privilege of joining others on a walking tour of Hadrian's Wall and the northern pennines, visiting Twice Brewed stargazing and planetarium, the Sill, Castle Towns museum, Blanchlands etc. The company operating the tour was 'Northern Secrets' and our guide was Anna Unger from Germany - and an Ambassador for her company. Albeit there had been a bad traffic accident and delays on the major roads which slightly delayed our start - Anna was most welcoming and cheerful, a true professional with a big smile. From our first encounter she spoke excellent english, has a great sense of humour and gave us a running commentary throughout the tour, such interesting facts about the places we were visiting and her local knowledge was amazing. Anna made our day very special - thank you.

We booked the Newcastle True Crime Tour as an office social event, which went down very well with all nine staff! Josh was a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable and friendly! The stories were fascinating! We would highly recommend this, just remember to bring warm coat as by 9pm it gets very chilly! 👍👍👍

I can’t say enough good things about Anna and Newcastle Tour Co. We were a party of six and did a full day tour of Hadrian’s Wall and County Durham. Spectacular Roman ruins, with a world class museum, Vindolanda Fort & Museum. Great pubs for lunch and refreshments. Do not hesitate to book a tour with Newcastle Tour Co.

I've seen quite a few Roman ruins around the Mediterranean but viewing the northern borders, specifically Hadrian's Wall had escaped me, until this past August. We (5) were traveling from London to Edinburgh by train and having a hard time figuring out how to do this when I contacted Northern Secrets. Alex figured it all out and set up an amzaing experience. Our incredible guide and expert, Fran met us at the train and along with Paul our driver, we set off a fantastic tour. We hit all the best spots and Fran was a delight and had such great in-depth knowledge of that period. She really made the history come alive and pointed out many things we would have missed. Highly recommend this company -- great communications, very responsive.

I went on the True Crime Tour of Newcastle and would highly recommend!! The tour was super interesting and entertaining and the tour guide Fran was really friendly and answered any question I had about Newcastle. She made true crime really fun and engaging which I didn't know was possible! It was amazing to learn so much about the city I've been living in for so long so I would really recommend to locals as well as visitors!
