Nice experience with dangling your legs over the ledge of the train however 1hr was kinda long. 30mins would have been just great after the novelty wears off. Tickets are always hard to purchase beforehand if not with a tour
Puffing Billy Railway is a must-visit when you’re in Melbourne. Riding the steam train through the forest is so much fun, especially sitting on the open carriage with your legs hanging out. It’s a unique and memorable experience for all ages. Highly recommended!
We visited Puffing Billy and really enjoyed the experience. We discovered it by chance after seeing an advertisement at the airport, and were pleasantly surprised. We took the 10:00 AM ride from Belgrave to Lakeside, where you have about an hour to spend. There’s a café at the Lakeside station, but the sandwiches weren’t great. I’d recommend bringing your own food and enjoying it by the lake. The train ride itself is fun and unique. We’re a couple in our 30s and weren’t sure if this would suit our age, but it definitely did and we had a great time. Tips: tickets are assigned by carriage number, so arrive early to get a good seat. When boarding from platform 2, sit on the side facing the platform for better views. One downside is the cancellation policy: there are no refunds or flexibility, even for cancellations made well in advance. While we didn’t need to cancel, we feel this is something that could be improved, and for that reason we removed one star.
