An incredibly beautiful place that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. Clean, well maintained, with a fascinating atmosphere and, of course, a majestic history. However, there are some serious downsides. The entrance fee is extremely high and, in my opinion, not justified. There are different entrance prices for different nationalities, which I personally find difficult to understand and which felt almost discriminatory to me. This is just a basic entrance ticket, like at many other attractions in Istanbul. A guide must be paid for separately. There is no free audio guide — only a paid one costing 400 Turkish lira, while at many other attractions audio guides are provided free of charge. This is definitely a downside. I honestly don’t understand how such deeply personal and spiritual places can be made fully paid attractions. Of course, I understand the need to maintain and preserve such a site in good condition, but setting such an extremely high and unclear entrance price still doesn’t make sense to me. Another drawback was that cash payments were not accepted — only card payments, and only Visa or Mastercard. That said, I still recommend visiting this place at least once in your life to experience and appreciate its power and beauty. My advice is to download a video or audio guide from YouTube in advance and listen to it while you are inside — it will make the experience much more meaningful.

The Basilica Cistern was honestly mind-blowing. We were completely amazed. The atmosphere, the lighting, the massive columns, everything felt almost surreal. It is truly stunning and one of the most unique places we have ever visited. However, once again, the same issue we experienced with other tourist attractions in Istanbul applies here. It is not included in the Museum Pass, and the entrance fee is extremely expensive. Paying 40€ to visit a cistern feels completely disproportionate. Of course, the place is beautiful and impressive, but 40€ is simply too much. Around 10€ would have felt reasonable and fair. At this price, it unfortunately feels less like cultural appreciation and more like a business model built on continuous extra charges. It is a real shame, because the Basilica Cistern itself is absolutely worth seeing. But the pricing makes visitors feel more like money machines than welcomed guests.

Here’s a polished ~200-word paragraph you can use: The Basilica Cistern is a mesmerizing place that blends history, art, and engineering into one unforgettable experience. I highly recommend visiting in the morning to avoid the long queues, and booking tickets in advance makes the entry much smoother. Stepping inside, you immediately feel surrounded by the magnitude of its construction — the rows of towering columns, the textured walls, and the carefully structured layout reflect an incredible level of ancient engineering that still impresses today. Beyond its historical significance, the space also features contemporary art installations that thoughtfully interact with the environment, adding a creative dimension to the visit and inviting deeper reflection. One of the highlights is finding the famous Medusa head bases tucked within the columns — a fascinating and slightly mysterious detail that draws curiosity and admiration. The soft lighting and reflective water enhance the atmosphere, making the entire cistern feel both monumental and intimate at the same time. It’s not just a historical site, but an immersive experience where architecture, mythology, and artistic interpretation come together beautifully. A truly worthwhile stop when exploring Istanbul, offering both visual wonder and appreciation for ancient ingenuity.

This place is fantastic. Can't believe it was constructed thousands years ago. A truly magical place beneath the city. The Basilica Cistern has a mysterious, atmospheric vibe with its softly lit columns and reflections on the water. The Medusa heads are a highlight and make the visit unforgettable. Definitely worth seeing if you’re in Istanbul!

A great structure to see in Istanbul. Entrance and Exit: just at the slope adjacent to the tram line in the corner of Aya Sofia. Exit is through another area about 500 meters uphill. The issue is you have to take the stairs. Area is a bit wetted so be careful while stepping. Worth for money. There is no difference at which time you are entering the underground cistern. Because it is under the ground and well maintained with artificial architecture lights. But, less people gathered there after the evening. You should spend 50-90 minutes inside to see it properly. Different types of light with beautiful colours - just awesome, made the environment feel like more vibrant. Colours change alternately with time. You will feel a bit cold and wet so bring some extra warm clothes. But don’t forget your camera. This great structure was built by the Ottoman Empire hundreds of years ago to facilitate the water supply of the Topkapi Palace.
