The day begins with a scenic drive north through Borgarnes, the main town of western Iceland, before continuing west onto the stunning and colorful landscapes of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The route offers breathtaking views of the iconic Kirkjufell mountain and leads to the newly designated national park at the western tip of the peninsula. Here, the magnificent Snaefellsjokull glacier rises above the coastline, surrounded by dramatic beaches and cliffs. This glacier was made famous by the novel Journey to the Center of the Earth by French author Jules Verne. Along the way, we stop at Budir, once a thriving trading post, now known for its historic charm and the elegant Budir Hotel, where we pause for a relaxing coffee break.
Next, we explore the picturesque village of Arnarstapi, renowned for its striking sea cliffs and panoramic ocean views. A scenic walk connects Arnarstapi to Hellnar, a small coastal settlement nestled beneath the glacier. This area is rich with birdlife and natural beauty, offering visitors a true taste of Iceland’s wild charm. In the summer, we stop for lunch at the Fjoruhusid Cafe near the beach, where the sound of seabirds fills the air. Continuing to Djupalonssandur, we spend some peaceful time on its black sand beach, surrounded by rugged rock formations and sea views. The final stop is Olafsvik, a traditional fishing village on the northern coast, before returning to Reykjavik, completing a day filled with nature, history, and Icelandic charm.

Kirkjufell Mountain is absolutely stunning and one of the most iconic sights in Iceland. You can actually see it right from the highway, and there’s a super easy parking lot just off the road, which makes stopping to take photos really convenient. The shape of the mountain is so unique—it almost doesn’t look real. Whether you’re catching it with the waterfall in front or seeing it during sunset, it’s breathtaking every time. Definitely one of those must-see spots that captures the magic of Iceland’s landscape!

Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) is probably the most easily recognisable landmark on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It is included in many travel videos and promotion material for Iceland due to its beautiful natural shape which many believe resembles a church. The mountain is located near Grundarfjörður which is in general a very beautiful around for such a mountain. It is 463 metres tall and can be climbed during season (15 June to ) along the south by southwest ridge but this is only recommended for experienced mountain climbers and it is prohibited to climb out of season as it is considered too dangerous. You can view Kirkjufell quite nicely from your vehicle as you drive past. There is a private carpark (1000kr per vehicle) at Kirkjafellfoss (waterfall) where you can exit your vehicle see a set of cascading falls and enjoy seeing the mountain. You can take lovely photos of the mountain with the falls from certain positions.

Definitely beautiful and worth a visit if you are somewhat nearby. For us it was quite the detour and I’m not sure if this was really worth it considering all the other beautiful scenery Iceland has to offer. Felt quite crowded and a bit overhyped.

Was a cool mountain peak with a waterfall. Some people like this guy in the attached photo thought they were the most important person there. The same weird dude decided to shush me for talking after he broke every rule at the place. Someone find this dudes IG.

If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, then this is a must visit on your itinerary. It was raining during our visit but the mountain and waterfalls views were still beautiful. And the mist shrouded mountains with the fading sunlight gave it an air of mystery.

The day trip to Snaeffsnes was just awesome. We recommend. It gives an extremely good insight into the country, as you can learn a lot about the country and its people through the private care. As part of such a tour, it is possible to see one or the other place more than on larger tours and there is no time pressure. Overall, we found the day to be the best activity of the week that we spent in Iceland and would book it again at any time.
