Afternoon Delight

The adventure begins at Þingvellir National Park, the historic site of Iceland’s ancient parliament. Guests will spend about twenty minutes walking through the park, taking in the dramatic landscape where the mid-Atlantic ridge splits apart over a nine-thousand-year-old lava field. From there, the tour heads to the geothermal area of Haukadalur, home to the famous Strokkur geyser. Visitors can expect to witness eruptions every five to seven minutes, with boiling water spouting twenty-five to thirty meters into the air. While exploring the colorful hot springs, the powerful energy of Iceland’s geothermal activity is on full display. Next, the journey continues to Gullfoss waterfall, a stunning two-tiered cascade plunging into the Hvita river, fed by glacial runoff that creates a striking and thundering spectacle.

The tour then moves north along the Kjölur interior mountain road, one of the longest and most historic routes through the Icelandic Highlands, mentioned in the sagas of early settlers. Here, guests encounter Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier. During summer, the route allows for a drive onto the glacier, while in winter, snowmobile activities take place on or near the ice, offering the option to extend exploration by an extra hour or more if desired. The day concludes with a countryside dinner before returning to Reykjavík. Depending on the season, guests may enjoy a chance to see the northern lights in winter or experience the midnight sun in summer, making for a truly memorable Icelandic adventure.
