Dachau Memorial Site Preserves the Memory of Victims of Nazi Persecution

Established on March 22, 1933, just weeks after Adolf Hitler became Reich Chancellor, Dachau Concentration Camp became the first permanent Nazi concentration camp in Germany. Located near Munich, the camp was initially created to imprison political opponents but later expanded to include Jews, Roma, homosexuals, and many others persecuted by the Nazi regime. Dachau became a model for the wider concentration camp system and a training ground where SS officers learned methods of brutal control and oppression.

During its 12 years of operation, more than 200,000 people from across Europe were imprisoned at Dachau and its network of subsidiary camps. Political dissidents, intellectuals, resistance members, and many other targeted groups endured forced labor, starvation, disease, and systematic violence. Around 41,500 prisoners lost their lives as a result of the camp’s inhumane conditions and Nazi policies.

The camp became a symbol of suffering, with overcrowded barracks, medical experimentation facilities, and a crematorium reflecting the cruelty faced by prisoners. The harsh conditions imposed by SS guards created an environment of fear and destruction, making Dachau one of the most notorious sites of persecution during the Nazi era.

On April 29, 1945, American forces liberated Dachau, revealing the devastating reality of the atrocities committed there. Today, the Dachau Memorial Site serves as a place of remembrance and education, preserving historic areas such as the barracks, crematorium, and exhibition halls. Through personal stories and historical displays, the memorial ensures that the experiences of victims are remembered and that the lessons of history continue to be shared with future generations.
