Step back in time and discover Fiorenza, the Florence that Dante Alighieri knew and loved, long before the iconic landmarks we recognize today like Giotto's Bell Tower, the Brunelleschi Dome, and Palazzo Vecchio were constructed. In Dante’s era, Florence was a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets, with stone built houses and towering wooden structures. The city was teeming with small churches, tall towers, and vibrant studios, creating the perfect backdrop for the legendary poet’s life. On this captivating walking tour, you will follow in Dante’s footsteps, exploring monuments, ancient tombstones, houses, towers, and historic streets that deeply influenced his works and his connection to the city.
As we walk, we’ll delve into the world of The Divine Comedy, Dante’s monumental masterpiece. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of the poem’s significance, as we retrace the steps of Dante through the very places that inspired its verses.
The journey begins in Duomo Square, home to the city’s oldest structure, the Baptistery of San Giovanni. In medieval times, this square was the main entrance to the city, and from here, we will venture into the so called Dante’s District. If you look up as you walk, you’ll be able to spot Dante’s words inscribed on the ancient Florentine towers, a true testament to the poet’s legacy.
Next, we’ll visit the location believed to be Dante’s birthplace, as well as the place where he first encountered Beatrice, the woman who became the muse for much of his work. Continuing our journey, we will head to the Dante Studies Center and Ponte Vecchio, where we will learn about the fierce Guelph and Ghibelline struggle that led to the division of the city and its people.
As we make our way to the heart of medieval Florence, we’ll stop at Piazza della Signoria, where we’ll visit the imposing Palazzo Vecchio. Here, we’ll view Dante’s funerary mask, a powerful reminder of the poet’s lasting impact on the city.
