Embark on a breathtaking journey from Bolzano, the gateway to the Dolomites and the capital of South Tyrol, as we begin our scenic tour through the magnificent Dolomite mountains. Our adventure starts with a drive through the Ega Valley, nestled between the stunning Rosengarten and Latemar mountains. This historic route, constructed in 1895 during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, takes us through a picturesque canyon carved by the Ega River, showcasing the natural beauty of the area.
Our first stop is the serene Carezza Lake, considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites. Here, you can take a leisurely 30-minute walk around the lake and absorb the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. From there, we continue our journey to Costalunga Pass, where we will view the historic Grand Hotel Carezza, the first luxury hotel in the Dolomites, built in 1893. This elegant hotel once hosted notable figures such as Empress Sissi, Winston Churchill, and Agatha Christie.
Next, we head into the stunning Fassa Valley in Trentino, passing through the charming towns of Vigo di Fassa and Canazei. As we make our way through the valley, we’ll be greeted by the towering peaks of the Sella Group. Our journey continues with a thrilling drive up 27 hairpin bends, known as switchbacks, leading us to the famous Pordoi Pass, situated at an altitude of 2,239 meters above sea level. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to take a one-hour break and, if you wish, ride the cable car up to Sass Pordoi, which reaches an elevation of 2,950 meters. The cable car operates from late May until mid-October and from Christmas to Easter.
After descending from Pordoi Pass, we’ll make our way to the Sella Pass, where you will be treated to stunning views of the vertical walls of the Sella massif. From this vantage point, we can admire the Marmolada Glacier (3,343 meters) and the majestic Sassolungo (3,181 meters), the most iconic mountain of the Gardena Valley. A short 10-minute photo stop allows you to capture the spectacular scenery.
Our tour then takes us down into the renowned Gardena Valley, a popular destination for tourists exploring the Dolomites. Here, we will visit Ortisei, the largest town in the valley, where you can enjoy a one-hour lunch break and explore the town’s charm. Afterward, we’ll head back to Bolzano, where we will conclude our unforgettable journey, filled with natural wonders and rich history of the Dolomites.
