Our tour begins in Assisi, a sanctuary city known for its rich religious, artistic, and historical significance. As we walk through this spiritual town, we’ll explore ancient Roman ruins, including the remains of a local amphitheater and the beautifully preserved Minerva Temple, which dates back to 30 BC. Standing proudly in Piazza del Comune, this temple was later transformed into the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in the 16th century. The walking tour continues through Assisi’s charming medieval streets, where we’ll visit local handicraft shops and winding alleys. A key highlight of the day is the Basilica of Saint Francis, renowned for its breathtaking frescoes by Giotto and other prominent medieval artists, such as Cimabue and Cavallini. These frescoes, designed to educate the public, tell the life story of Saint Francis in vivid, captivating imagery, making the basilica one of Italy's most important cultural and religious landmarks.
After a break for lunch, we’ll continue our journey to the picturesque town of Spello, another enchanting hill village in Umbria. Known for its vibrant floral decorations, Spello is particularly famous for the "Infiorata," a historical event that takes place each year during the Corpus Domini, where locals create stunning flower displays to honor the Body of Christ. In addition to its colorful streets, Spello boasts Renaissance art, particularly the work of Pinturicchio, a renowned 15th-century painter who also contributed to the Vatican in Rome. Spello’s compact size does not diminish its charm; the town’s beauty and artistic heritage make it a must-visit destination that offers an authentic taste of Umbrian culture.

Our family of 5 had an outstanding experience exploring Assisi with Alessandra. She was very kind and patient, and was engaging for our kids. Alessandra was proud of her city and had a lot of knowledge and history to share. We hope to do another tour on our next trip.

Our guide, Werner, was the best... Having lived in Assisi for decades now, his depth of art history, general history & site knowledge is deep, broad and nuanced. He conveyed so much - and so interestingly! Intriguing about how St. Frances & St. Clare came to be who they became... And especially his superb art history knowledge - - from Giotto, Cimabue to Simone Martini to 16th c 'naughty' ceiling frescoes, the ideas of narrative, perspective, even color pigment cost (the rare blues!!) - what a great visit. Our group had a lot of people who had studied art history, and everyone thought Werner was brilliant & insightful yet always with a moment of humor.

We took the Assisi tour with Michele! It was fantastic! Michele is an excellent guide and we learned so much information about St Francis and St Clare. The churches were stunning. Do this tour to get a great experience!

Our guide Analita was fantastic! Her knowledge of each site in Assisi and St Francis was exceptional. In addition, she connected the journey of St Francis with the social and political history at the time of his existence and the impact he had on the Catholic church, the style of art being rendered and the change of thinking in leadership. We spent the entire day with Analita and her sense of humor and patience combined with her excellent execution of visiting All the important sites ( of which there are about 7 or 8!) , especially considering we visited on a Sunday when many sites have limited hours, was superb! We highly recommend Analita as a guide you can depend upon to have an excellent experience!

We had an amazing day tour with a gifted local tour guide, Michele, who filled the day with historic facts and interesting stories about his home of Perugia and nearby Assisi. Both were beautiful and history rich places that were influenced by Saint Francis and Roman inhabitants long ago, to name a couple. Michele was a skilled historian and story teller who was interesting and engaging as he shared information about people, places and objects. The day flew by so quickly, it was sad to leave and we all wanted to have more time to learn more. Michele had a skilled driver, Maurzio, who safely and professionally delivered us from Perugia to Assisi, while sharing some stories about his home in Assisi during the drive. I highly recommend this tour as a wonderful learning experience and a feast for your ears and eyes! Gracie Mille Gentiluomo!
