Baduy is a culturally preserved area in the Banten province of West Java, home to one of Indonesia’s most unique and traditional tribes. Known originally as the Kanekes people, the Baduy have maintained their way of life since the mid-1500s, during the era of the Banten Sultanate and later colonial rule. Deeply rooted in the ancient Sunda Wiwitan belief system, the community continues to live in harmony with nature, untouched by modern influence.
In Baduy, traditional values are strictly upheld. Villagers walk barefoot over long distances, rely on no modern transportation, and live in houses made of bamboo and wooden rope without the use of electricity. Their lifestyle is a powerful reflection of simplicity and sustainability, supported by government efforts to protect and preserve this cultural heritage.
Visitors to Baduy can explore the village, visit traditional homes, and gain a deeper understanding of their customs and beliefs. Accompanied by local guides and representatives, the experience offers a rare opportunity to witness and respect a living culture that remains largely unchanged for centuries.
