Sometimes, nature’s transformation occurs over a brief moment, while other times it spans millions of years. The Albanian Colorado, also known as the Grand Canyon of Albania, is a magnificent example of the latter. Carved by the waters of the Osum River over at least 2 to 3 million years, this canyon reveals a fascinating geological history. Geologists believe that the Osum River once flowed underground, and over time, the rock above it eroded away, exposing the riverbed to the open air. Today, the canyon stretches nearly 30 kilometers and is divided into six narrow sections. In some parts, the gorge narrows dramatically, with the river splitting into small rivulets and canyon walls standing just 1.5 to 2 meters apart. In other areas, the canyon widens up to 35 meters with towering walls. Exploring the riverbed on foot allows visitors to admire the intricate rock formations shaped by wind and water. Locals have given these formations colorful names inspired by their resemblance to animals and human figures, adding a magical charm to the experience.
As the journey continues near Corovoda in the district of Skrapar, visitors make a brief stop at the Tyrbe, a mausoleum sacred to the Bektashi community. From here, the adventure shifts to the water, where participants embark on canoes at a wider section of the riverbed, easily accessible for entry. Canoes are connected securely, and life jackets and helmets are provided for safety, guided by expert helmsmen. This section of the canyon extends for almost 15 kilometers, with waters reaching depths of over 70 meters. The excitement builds with every passing moment, peaking as rafters glide beneath the spectacular waterfalls that cascade through the canyon. The combination of breathtaking scenery and adrenaline-filled rafting creates an unforgettable experience.
After approximately one hour and forty-five minutes of exhilarating river rafting, the journey ends in Corovoda. Here, guests have the opportunity to relax and refuel with a delicious lunch featuring typical local products at a nearby restaurant. This final stop offers a perfect chance to reflect on the stunning natural beauty and thrilling adventure of the Osum River canyon, making it a truly memorable excursion that connects visitors deeply with Albania’s unique landscape and cultural heritage.
