Departing from Berat your journey to the peak of Mount Tomorr begins with a scenic three-hour ascent. The first leg of the trip follows asphalt roads through serene countryside until you reach the base of the Sacred Mountain. Along the way, you’ll pass routes popular with adventure seekers—offering activities like rafting, canyoning, and hiking. While climbing the summit on foot is a challenge best suited for seasoned hikers, you’ll experience the beauty of the mountain in comfort and safety aboard off-road vehicles. As you ascend, the landscape transitions dramatically—cultivated fields and scattered farms gradually give way to open pastures, and then to vast pine forests. At elevations above 1,100 meters, the pines are replaced by dense beech woods, revealing how nature reclaims space as human presence thins out. The changing terrain paints a picture of how Albanian mountain life has evolved and survived in harmony with nature’s demands.
At the heart of this mountain lies spiritual depth and cultural heritage. You’ll arrive in the Tomorrica region, where the journey continues with a visit to the Bektashi Tekke—a revered shrine for the Bektashi Sufi order. This sanctuary, nestled high in the mountains, is not a mosque but a spiritual center of mysticism, asceticism, and interfaith respect. The Bektashi have been present in Albania since the 16th century, and every year in late August, thousands of followers from Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia make a pilgrimage to this site. During these five days of devotion, the area becomes alive with rituals, including animal sacrifices, prayer, singing, and communal feasts. The spiritual climax of the pilgrimage is the trek to the tomb of Abaz Aliu, a revered figure said to be the grandson of Muhammad and founder of the brotherhood. Upon reaching the summit at 2,400 meters by jeep, you’ll not only be greeted by sweeping views of southern Albania’s wild landscape but also the chance to explore the mausoleum. This sacred peak, with its profound history and powerful energy, offers a glimpse into the deep spiritual connection between Albanians and their mountainous homeland.
