Pen y Fan is the highest mountain in Southern Britain and a true icon of the Welsh landscape. Our small group 'Secret Pen y Fan' hike offers a unique and adventurous route, avoiding the crowded trails in favor of tracks less travelled. This 11km route with 600m of ascent starts by following the Taff River to its source — a path so quiet you’ll likely have it all to yourself. Expect wet feet, so good boots are essential! After that, it's a steep but rewarding climb to Corn Du and Pen y Fan, where you can take in stunning panoramic views stretching from Devon and Somerset in the south to Cadair Idris in the north on clear days. Along the way, you’ll discover a hidden fossil beach and plenty of scenic photo opportunities.
Once we leave the summit, it’s back to wild trails as we slide down grassy slopes, laughing all the way, and then explore the beautiful Llyn Cwm Llwch, a lake steeped in Welsh legend. You'll hear the real story behind the poignant Tommy Jones memorial before we climb one final peak, Yr Gyrn, to complete our circular adventure. With a qualified guide leading the way and sharing stories, geology, and local lore, this walk is as informative as it is exhilarating. Although Pen y Fan itself is often busy, this route ensures a peaceful and memorable mountain experience, especially during midweek.
