About this activity
Embarking on this captivating journey from Edinburgh, we’ll trace the ancient route of Dere Street, once a vital supply line linking the bustling ports of southern England with the heart of Scotland. Our first destination is the charming town of Jedburgh, renowned for its stunning 12th-century Augustinian Abbey. Here, you can immerse yourself in the history while enjoying a leisurely coffee at a local café.
Continuing our adventure, we’ll ascend to the picturesque Carter Bar, where breathtaking views of the Cheviot Hills await. The impressive stone pillars and vibrant national flags signify the border crossing between Scotland and England—a fantastic opportunity for memorable photographs.
As we venture further, we’ll catch our first glimpse of the legendary Hadrian’s Wall, a monumental feat of Roman engineering. We’ll pause at the striking Steel Rigg, where you can stroll along the wall’s undulating path, soaking in views of the tranquil Crag Lough.
Next, we’ll explore the fascinating archaeological site of Vindolanda. This well-preserved Roman fort offers invaluable insights into the daily lives of its inhabitants, with numerous artifacts on display at the visitor center.
As our day winds down, we’ll return north through the scenic Borders, making a brief stop for refreshments before concluding our unforgettable excursion in Edinburgh.
