About this activity
The Bog Road, once the main route to Galway before Clifden was founded, carries a dark and eerie history. Among its most chilling legends is that of a guesthouse known as the Halfway House, which was said to be the scene of gruesome murders. In the 1790s, a brother and sister ran this remote hostelry, but their hospitality hid sinister intentions. According to local folklore, they preyed on unsuspecting solo travelers, welcoming them in only to murder them at the stroke of midnight. The unfortunate victims were then disposed of in the surrounding bog lakes, their bodies swallowed by the unforgiving land as the siblings pocketed their belongings.
The legend of this eerie stretch of road has lived on for generations, fueling ghostly tales and local superstitions. Many believe that the spirits of these hapless victims still wander the lonely bog, their restless souls haunting the windswept landscape. Among these spectral figures, the most famous is the Red-Haired Girl at the Inn, a tragic apparition said to appear to travelers who dare to journey down the road after dark. Whether fact or fiction, the haunted reputation of the Bog Road continues to captivate and unnerve all who hear its chilling tale.
